UL Careers Early Careers Employer Survey 2026

Top Motivational Factors for Students (Ranked)

Student Voice

Key Insights:

• Student motivations entering the workforce show a subtle but meaningful shift in 2026. Work–life balance now ranks as the most important factor, suggesting that graduates are increasingly seeking roles that support wellbeing and sustainable working patterns alongside career development. • Growth and development remain key motivators, reinforcing a strong interest in learning opportunities, mentoring, and clear progression pathways. Employers offering structured graduate programmes and ongoing professional development are therefore likely to remain attractive to early career talent.

• The emergence of relationships as the third most important factor highlights the value students place on workplace culture, supportive colleagues, and a sense of belonging. This underlines the importance of inclusive environments and strong team dynamics in attracting and retaining graduates. • While achievement and recognition remain important,

they rank slightly lower this year. Security and responsibility sit further down the list, suggesting that early career professionals may prioritise development, balance, and positive workplace experiences over long-term stability in the early stages of their careers.
