2025 Graduate Outcome Survey Release

2025 Graduate Outcomes Survey Graduates of 2024 1

2

Introduction

The Cooperative Education and Careers Division is delighted to present the findings of the survey of the UL Class of 2024.

This year’s Graduate Outcomes Report reflects the voices of 2,701 respondents, representing the largest survey of UL graduates to date and providing significant data across all award categories. The report allows us to examine and cross-reference the survey results using a wide range of indicators, including award level, employment status, further study/training, faculty, programme, gender, location, salary, and sector. These findings are widely used for programme planning, accreditation, rankings, quality reviews, marketing, and strategic reporting purposes. The report reflects a healthy graduate labour market, with 95% of UL graduates progressing directly into employment or further study. The highest concentrations of graduates are in the Mid-West, East, and South-West regions of Ireland. Internationally, the most popular destinations for the Class of 2024 were Europe, North America, and Great Britain. The UL Class of 2024 report forms part of a national survey of graduate outcomes deployed annually by the Higher Education Authority. The national data are used extensively by government agencies, second-level guidance counsellors, and applicants for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. I would like to extend my thanks to Gavin Connell and Mark Robert for their work on this extensive survey and hope that you will find the report and its findings both interesting and useful. Kind regards,

Patrice Dr Patrice Twomey, Director, Cooperative Education and Careers Division

Additional Insights – Class of 2024

A consistent theme across the Graduate Outcomes Survey and the Early Careers Employer Survey is the strong workplace readiness of UL graduates. Employers frequently point to the value of UL’s placement model, which spans Co-operative Education across all faculties, school placements for trainee teachers, and clinical placements in Nursing and Allied Health. These experiences ensure graduates leave UL with not only academic expertise but also significant professional experience and confidence in applying their skills. Graduates are moving into employment quickly, particularly in healthcare, education, engineering, and financial services. Many secure offers directly from their placement employers, while others benefit from the competitive edge these experiences provide when applying elsewhere. Structured graduate programmes, especially within multinational companies and professional services firms, also remain an important career pathway. Placements provide more than a line on a CV; they allow students to put theory into practice in settings that mirror their future careers. Engineering and business students on Co-op, trainee teachers in classrooms, and nursing or allied health students in hospitals and community health services all gain invaluable first-hand experience. Employers consistently identify this practical grounding as a key differentiator of UL graduates. There is also a wider community dimension. Placements in schools, hospitals, and health services contribute directly to regional development while strengthening employability. They enable graduates to enter the labour market with a clear sense of purpose and responsibility, positioning them to contribute effectively to inclusive and values-driven workplaces in Ireland and abroad.

Region of Employment The Western Corridor — spanning the West, Mid-West, and South-West — remains the most significant destination for UL graduates. In 2024, 63% of the class found employment within the region, reinforcing the strong link between UL’s talent pipeline and regional economic performance. Employers highlight that retention in the region is supported not only by the availability of graduate roles but also by lifestyle, affordability, and the flexibility offered by hybrid work models. While Dublin and the East continue to attract graduates, employment is now more evenly spread, with strong representation across healthcare, education, advanced manufacturing, financial services, and technology.

At the same time, employers responding to the Early Careers Employer Survey note a slowdown in foreign direct investment and more cautious hiring by multinationals, reflecting current global economic uncertainty. Despite this, regional resilience has been strengthened by a “nearshoring” approach, with employers decentralising operations without losing access to skilled graduates. This sustained flow of graduates into regional employment underlines UL’s critical role in building resilience, supporting employers, and contributing to the long-term competitiveness of Ireland’s western and southern regions. 17

The Class of 2024 continues to demonstrate strong international mobility, with 11% securing employment overseas. This reflects both the demand for UL graduates abroad and the global recognition of Irish qualifications. This year, Education emerged as the leading sector for overseas employment (16%), followed by Human Health & Social Work (15%), Professional, Scientific & Technical roles (15%), Industry (13%), and Financial, Insurance & Real Estate (11%). The distribution highlights the adaptability of UL graduates across both technical professions and people-focused roles. Geographically, the European Union remains the top destination (38%), showing a 2% increase on last year. North America (26%) and Great Britain (16%) also remain significant destinations, supported by strong cultural and economic ties. In an era of heightened economic uncertainty, UL graduates continue to compete successfully for opportunities abroad. Their ability to secure roles across a wide range of industries and geographies reinforces their reputation for quality, ambition, and adaptability in the global workforce.
